One of the many weather charts and graphs shown on NHK news on TV. There is a great deal of discussion of weather constantly, and reminders to drink water with salt and sugar, use fans etc. I like the faces...

Mom went to the Dr.'s office and pharmacy yesterday, as soon as they opened. Trying to get things done before it got too hot. Hot and humid, everyday the news brings a story on how many people needed treatment for heat related illness that day.

Shiratama Dango (small mochi) with pudding and maccha sauce, seriously addicting, so fresh and delicious! |
Last night the Nagoya Sumo Basho started. Every day now for the next 15 days Mom will be glued to the TV (3-6 pm). It's fun to watch, and nice to see her get so into it. Her favorite is Kisenosato, a Japanese Ozeki rank (2nd highest rank). Japan has not had a native-born Yokozuna (highest rank) since 2003. There are only two Yokozuna currently, both from Mongolia. Mom has high hopes that Kisenosato will rise in rank soon; the video below is his first match from last night. The entire crowd and country hopes he wins too, it seems.
By chance, late last night I couldn't sleep and caught the live broadcast of Wimbledon (Men's Singles final). There was that same national spirit vibe, it's been so long since Great Britain had a winner. Four or five games into my viewing I realized that the station was not breaking for commercials (Channel NHK1). What a nice change from the American networks!

After lunch we stopped at Isezaki Mall (large outdoor shopping street), went to the biggest Daiso (100 ¥ store) I've seen yet.

Wagashi are Japanese traditional sweets, many different kinds including mochi. There is an old shop only a block away from the apartment, Kigetsudou, started in 1900. We bought some today, super fresh and delicious.
I don't know the names of most of these! We will definitely go again soon to try more.
