as kind as summer

"He was... as kind as summer"
speaking of Elrond, in The Hobbit, Chapter 3

An Elrond collectible fell out of some laundry in the washer (I was trying to clear out some old packed boxes of miscellanea) and he ended up taking Jasmine's former roost on the windowsill. I'm hoping he brings some summer sunniness to the tomatoes there.

Tons of green and partly ripe tomatoes still on the vine. The garden gets little sunshine now until late in the day, evenings are down into 30's and 40's, it's already snowed once. Time is running out.

Set out into sunshine for ripening

Hoping for some late vine-ripening

1 quart Green tomatoes ( 7 or 8 tomatoes - chopped fine or ground in the food processor)
1 quart apples (7 apples - chopped fine or ground in the food processor)
    4 cups of sugar
    1 cup of vinegar
    1 lb of dark raisins
2 teaspoons of clove, 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
    2 tablespoons of flour
1/4 cup of butter (substitute oil?)

Mix all together brind to a slow boil, then simmer for 25 minutes.

Pack in hot steril jars and seal. Makes about 3 quarts.

Makes 3 or 4 pies, each pie takes about 3/4 of a quart jar. One crust.
